The History of the Rottweiler
From Roman Working Dog to Modern companion protected by the ADRK

The Rottweiler is one of the world’s oldest working breeds, with roots stretching back more than 2,000 years. Though all dogs descend from the wolf, selective breeding shaped the Rottweiler into a powerful, intelligent partner that has served humans across millennia.

Ancient Roman Origins: The First Working Rottweilers

The Rottweiler’s story begins with the Roman Legions, who required strong, dependable dogs to:
Drive and manage cattle
Protect soldiers and livestock
Endure long-distance marches
React calmly to new challenges

These early drover dogs travelled with the Roman armies across Europe. When they reached southern Germany, they interbred naturally with local herding dogs in the region now known as Rottweil—a thriving cattle-trading town.

The result was a robust, courageous working dog later named the Rottweiler Metzgerhund (Rottweil Butcher’s Dog).

19th Century: The Butcher’s Dog of Rottweil

By the 1800s, Rottweilers were essential to butchers, drovers and farmers thanks to their:
Intelligence and endurance
Calm confidence
Natural guarding instincts
Strength and reliability

They drove cattle across long distances, protected livestock from wolves and bandits, guarded their owners, and even pulled small carts. A drover would never travel without trustworthy Rottweilers at his side.

With the rise of rail transport, their traditional job became less common—but their working value remained.

20th Century: The Rottweiler Becomes a Service Dog

In 1910, Germany officially recognised the Rottweiler as a police and service dog, celebrating its:
Exceptional trainability
Strength and courage
Intelligence
Steady, reliable temperament

Rottweilers excelled in police work, military service, tracking, search and rescue, and protection—proving their incredible versatility and working drive.

Today: A Loyal Family Companion and Working Partner
Modern Rottweilers are admired worldwide for their:
Loyalty and emotional intelligence
Calm, stable temperament
Confidence and obedience
Willingness to work and protect

With responsible breeding and proper socialisation, the Rottweiler becomes a devoted family dog, a trustworthy guardian, and a capable working or sport partner.

The ADRK: Protectors of the True German Rottweiler
The Allgemeiner Deutscher Rottweiler-Klub (ADRK) is the official German Rottweiler organisation and the only club recognised by the VDH. For over 90 years, the ADRK has upheld strict standards that protect:
Temperament
Working ability
Health
Breed type and structure

The ADRK remains the global benchmark for correct Rottweiler breeding and preservation.
